Introduction

Multifactor authentication allows you to secure your Office 365 account with more than just a password. It allows you to perform two-factor authentication using 'something you have' using:

  • An SMS message
  • A phone call
  • A push notification to the Microsoft Authentication app on your smartphone
When multifactor authentication is enabled for your organisation you'll be prompted to setup one or more of the authentication methods above. Below is the steps you need to change these settings after the initial configuration.

Manage your settings for two-step verification

  • Select Security & privacy

  • Select Additional security verification

  • The Additional security verification page will load and show your existing multifactor authentication methods

To change your primary phone number:

  • On the Additional security verification page, select the text box with your current phone number and change it to reflect your updated phone number.
  • Select Save to apply your changes.
Note: If this is the number that you use for your preferred verification option, you have to verify the new number before you can save it.

To add a secondary phone number:

  • On the Additional security verification page, check the box next to Alternate authentication phone.
  • Enter your alternative phone number in the text box.
  • Select Save to apply your changes.

To change app settings:

  • On the Additional security verification page, check the box next to Authenticator app then select Configure

  • This will bring up a QR code

  • Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone. On the Accounts screen, select +, and then specify the type of account you would like to add.
  • When prompted, use the camera to scan the QR code and add the account to your device.
  • Select Done to close the QR code screen on your computer.
